How many of us have gone through a grocery without thinking about what we’re putting in our carts? We rushed through the store in an effort to get everything we need at the shortest possible time that we forget to investigate what it is that we’re actually eating. It’s important to buy the right products when we’re Lakeland shopping for food. And all it takes is a little bit of your time to study what you should be putting in those carts.

To ensure that you’re buying the right products and the healthiest choices available, there are a few things that you should be on the lookout for.

Ingredients list

The longer the ingredients list, the less healthy those food products are going to be. Healthy products will only have the most basic of ingredients, so that means a shorter list. As the list lengthens, that means chemicals and additives are being added. These could be harmful to consume. Remember also that ingredients are listed in order of their quantity. If you see sugar listed on top of the list, that means it’s the primary ingredient of the product.

Serving size

Do you think that the label is too good to be true? Does it contain few calories even though it’s around 500ML? Some packages contain multiple servings, so the label you’re seeing might be referring to just one portion of that large serving size.

Amount of sodium

The American Heart Association said that on average, an American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium a day. That’s double the daily recommendation. Most of the sodium comes from packaged food, so pay attention to the sodium content of the product and try to stick to less than 1,500 milligrams a day.

Amount of sugar

Americans are consuming way too much sugar. The American Heart Association recommends consuming only 25 grams of sugar a day, but the average American consumes over 100 grams daily. Read the label carefully and remember that sugar has many hidden names so you may think you’re eating healthy, but you’re actually consuming sugar.

BPA-free cans

Buying canned goods is not only the worst because the food contains no nutritional value but also because the cans can contain bisphenol A-based epoxy (BPA), a chemical classified as a female reproductive toxin. Look for cans that are free of BPA and choose to buy fresh food (vegetables and fruits, especially) instead.
